Do I actually need to get a permit?
When you hear the words, "You will need to get a permit for this job." are you both shocked and apprehensive? Many are surprised to hear that their job requires a permit. Many think that building permits are only needed for large building projects, not for small work. However, a building permit is needed for any job that does not entail like-for-like replacement or low-voltage wiring. For example, if you want to replace the ceiling fan in your bedroom with a new one, that job can be done unpermitted. If you want to run new Cat5e cable in your living room, that can also be done without a permit. However, if you are planning on installing a new ceiling fan that will need to have new wiring ran, a permit will need to be obtained. When in doubt, call your local Community Development Department and speak with a building inspector. They will gladly answer any questions you may have about obtaining building permits.
While obtaining a building permit can prove to be a hassle, it is worth it to know that your work is being completed safely and legally. When working with Elan Electric on a job that requires a building permit, you can save yourself the trouble and hire us to get the permit for you. Our experienced team will be able to go through the whole process for you so you can save time and energy.
